Question - How do you read a green properly?

Answer - It all starts by looking at the general terrain around the course. On-course reading starts with the shot into the green. From far away you often can see slopes better than on the green itself.

A few tips:
  1. Look for the direction water would run off the green.
  2. Be aware of the grain.
  3. Move to the lowest point of the green and look from there.
  4. Think about speed of greens, type of grass and wind speed.
  5. Perhaps the most important part is near the hole because as he ball slows down it breaks the most.
  6. Visualize the break point; that is the highest point in the putt and where it is going to come down from.
  7. Finally, try to look at the break point as the target rather than the hole.
--Jim McLean, 1994 national teacher of the year

Question - Is there a consensus weight for your putter?

Answer - Weights are there strictly for your feel. Some people like a lighter putter on fast greens, but others will prefer a heavy one. You should try a variety of weight formulas and see what works for you.

--Jerry Mowlds, Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club, North Plains, Ore.
